Marrakech and the Medina

Some tips to start exploring the "red city" on the right foot.

Petit taxi: this small Peugeot (sand coloured, in Marrakech) can be stopped on the spot and can carry up to 3 persons. They will usually not want to use the meter. Never mind. A ride in the city costs between 10 and 20 Dhs  depending on the distance. Taxi sharing is normally practiced. Be generous! Small taxi are a public service accessible to the whole population, that's why their fares don’t rise, as everything else does.

Touristic tour by Bus: an excellent way to explore the red city enjoying the sun and a nice breeze. This double-decker bus allows one to easily visit many of Marrakech monuments and main attractions. The best place to catch it is from the coach station by Square de Foucauld, just in front of the Koutoubia Mosque, beside Jemaa el-Fna square. Tickets costs 150 Dhs and are valid for 24 hours from the time of issue.

Official multilingual guides: you can ask Dar Attajmil to arrange for you an Official Guide to explore the Medina for half or a full day, or you can go to the closest Touristic Information Board to get in touch with a qualified one. The average cost for a 1/2 day tour with the Guide is 45 €.

Inside the Souk the password is: "bargain". Do not be misled by the fixed price several shops show. To bargain is a tradition, a pastime, an art. Discuss and always show calm and your best smile. How? Be creative!

For those who can’t get to the desert and make your children happy, a camel ride in the palm grove of Marrakech can be arranged with us. Touristy, of course, but still exotic.
